Responsible Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence
Jurnal Al-Hikmah: Jurnal Dakwah recognizes the increasing use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in academic research, scholarly writing, and scientific publication.
Generative AI technologies may provide useful assistance in selected academic activities. However, their use must not compromise research originality, scholarly integrity, intellectual accountability, transparency, or the confidentiality of manuscripts.
This policy establishes principles for responsible use of generative AI by authors, reviewers, editors, and other individuals involved in the scholarly publication process.
Generative artificial intelligence refers to computational systems capable of producing text, images, code, data representations, translations, summaries, or other materials in response to user instructions.
Examples include large language models and AI-assisted writing applications, such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and other comparable technologies.
The use of these technologies does not replace the scholarly responsibilities of human researchers and authors.
The responsible use of generative AI in scholarly publication should follow these principles:
Transparency: Relevant use of AI-assisted technologies should be appropriately disclosed.
Accountability: Human authors remain responsible for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of their manuscripts.
Academic Integrity: AI-generated content must not be used to fabricate evidence, misrepresent research findings, or conceal plagiarism.
Confidentiality: Unpublished manuscripts, research data, and editorial communications must be appropriately protected.
Verification: AI-assisted information, quotations, and references must be checked against reliable and verifiable sources.
Human Oversight: Scholarly interpretation, ethical judgment, and publication decisions must remain under human responsibility.
Authors may use generative AI technologies to support academic activities when such assistance is consistent with research ethics, transparency, and applicable journal requirements.
Potentially Acceptable Uses
Improving grammar, spelling, and language clarity.
Assisting with translation of academic text, subject to careful human verification.
Supporting the organization and readability of manuscript drafts.
Assisting with coding or computational procedures when the methods and results are independently verified.
Supporting preliminary exploration of research concepts or relevant topics.
Providing technical assistance for manuscript preparation without replacing the author's original scholarly contribution.
The acceptability of AI assistance depends on its purpose, extent, and influence on the submitted work.
Authors must review, revise, and verify all AI-assisted content before submission.
Generative AI technologies must not be used in ways that compromise scholarly integrity or misrepresent the research process.
Unacceptable Practices
Fabricating or falsifying research data, observations, interviews, or findings.
Creating fictitious references, quotations, publications, or scholarly sources.
Presenting AI-generated research findings as independently collected empirical evidence.
Using AI-generated content to conceal plagiarism or inappropriate copying.
Misrepresenting AI-generated images, audio, or other materials as authentic research evidence.
Providing confidential or personal research information to AI services without appropriate authorization and safeguards.
Using AI to fabricate peer review reports, editorial correspondence, or publication records.
Artificial intelligence systems must not be listed as authors or co-authors of manuscripts submitted to the journal.
Authorship requires meaningful intellectual contribution, responsibility for the submitted work, and the ability to respond to questions regarding research integrity.
Generative AI systems cannot assume these responsibilities in the manner required of human authors.
All listed authors remain accountable for the accuracy, originality, ethical compliance, and integrity of manuscripts prepared with AI assistance.
Authors should transparently disclose material use of generative AI technologies during manuscript preparation or research activities.
Required Disclosure Information
1. The name of the AI tool or technology used.
2. The purpose for which the technology was used.
3. The manuscript components or research activities supported by AI.
4. The extent of human verification and oversight, where relevant.
AI assistance involving writing or language preparation may be described in an acknowledgment or an appropriate disclosure statement.
AI assistance involving data processing, analysis, computational methods, or figure generation should be explained in the relevant methodological section.
Example of AI Disclosure
"The authors used a generative artificial intelligence tool to assist with language editing and grammatical improvement. All AI-assisted content was reviewed, verified, and revised by the authors, who retain full responsibility for the final manuscript."
The disclosure must accurately reflect the actual use of AI technology.
Authors must independently verify academic references, quotations, research findings, and factual statements suggested by AI-assisted systems.
Generative AI technologies may produce references that are incomplete, inaccurate, nonexistent, or incorrectly attributed.
Authors should consult the original scholarly sources to confirm bibliographic information and the accuracy of cited material.
AI-generated responses should not be treated as substitutes for verifiable primary research sources.
Authors using AI-assisted technologies to generate or modify images, figures, diagrams, or research representations should ensure that such materials are accurate and appropriately identified.
AI-generated visual materials must not be presented as authentic photographic, documentary, observational, or empirical evidence when they do not represent actual data.
Authors must disclose material AI assistance in figure preparation and ensure compliance with relevant copyright, licensing, privacy, and research ethics requirements.
Any AI-assisted analytical procedures must be methodologically appropriate and sufficiently documented to support scholarly evaluation.
Peer reviewers are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of manuscripts and providing independent scholarly assessments.
Reviewers must not upload unpublished manuscripts, confidential review materials, or editorial correspondence to external AI systems where confidentiality cannot be assured.
Any proposed use of AI in the peer review process should be discussed with the editorial team before such technology is employed.
Where AI use is authorized, reviewers should disclose the nature of the assistance and remain fully responsible for the accuracy and quality of their evaluations.
AI-generated assessments must not replace independent expert judgment or professional peer review.
Editors may consider AI-assisted technologies for appropriate administrative or editorial support activities, subject to applicable confidentiality and ethical requirements.
Editors must not disclose confidential manuscripts or sensitive editorial information to AI services without appropriate safeguards and authorization.
Editorial decisions, including manuscript acceptance, revision, and rejection, must remain under responsible human oversight.
AI-generated information should not serve as the sole basis for evaluating the scholarly merit or integrity of a submitted manuscript.
Material use of AI in editorial processing should be communicated transparently where appropriate.
Automated AI detection technologies may produce inaccurate or inconclusive assessments of whether content was generated using artificial intelligence.
The results of AI detection tools should not be treated as definitive proof of misconduct.
Editorial assessments should consider available evidence, manuscript context, author explanations, and relevant academic integrity principles.
Authors should be given an appropriate opportunity to clarify substantial concerns regarding AI-assisted content.
Concerns regarding undisclosed or inappropriate use of generative AI should be evaluated under the journal's publication ethics procedures.
Depending on the nature and seriousness of the concern, editorial action may include requesting clarification, additional disclosure, manuscript revision, or further investigation.
Where substantiated misconduct affects the integrity of a manuscript or published article, the editorial team should consider the appropriate action under the journal's applicable policies.
Decisions should be fair, evidence-based, proportionate, and consistent with established publication ethics principles.
This policy should be read in conjunction with the journal's other editorial and research integrity policies.
